THE EYE

BACK TO ANATOMY

NOTES

EXTRAOCCULAR EYE MUSCLES
RECTI(straight)- are straight line from origin to attachment
Arise from a common tendinous ring at the back of the orbit

1.Superior
-Originates superior part of ring and attaches to sup and ant aspect of sclera
-Elevates plus add and med rot
 -Oculomotor Nerve III
2.Inferior
-Originates infring and attaches to infand ant part of sclera
 -Depression plus add and latrotation
 -Oculomotor nerve III
3.Medial
-Originates medial part of ring and attaches antro-medial part of sclera
 -Adducts the eye
 -Oculomotor nerve III
4.Lateral
-Originates latpart of ring and attaches to anterolateral part of sclera
 -Abducts the eye
 -Abducens nerve VI

OBLIQUES
Not from a common tendinous ring at the back of the orbit
Attach to back of sclera
Angular path to eyeball

1.Superior Oblique
-Originates from the body of the sphenoid bone. Its tendon passes through a trochlear, and then attaches to the sclera of the eye, posterior to the superior rectus.
-Depresses, abducts and medially rotates the eyeball.
 -Trochlear nerve (CN IV).
2.Inferior Oblique
-Originates from the anterior aspect of the orbital floor. Attaches to the sclera of the eye, posterior to the lateral rectus
-Elevates, abducts and laterally rotates the eyeball.
 -Oculomotor nerve (CN III).
